Current Themes of Research

  • Virginie NAZABAL got her PhD degree in Solid State Chemistry from the University of Bordeaux (France) in 1999. She joined the NIMS (Tsukuba, Japan) as post-doctoral fellowship in 2000 for 18 months. She belongs to the CNRS since 2001 and as CNRS research director since 2015. Her research activity is devoted to vitreous materials for optics at Glass & Ceramic (G&C) team of the Chemical Sciences Institute (ISCR) at the University of Rennes (France). She is currently exploring the potential of chalcogenides thin films and rare earth doping chalcogenide for photonic devices partnering with the whole Glasses and Ceramics team. In recent years, her research strongly interacts with the topic of infrared optical sensors; full growing research activity initiated about 15 years ago in the G&C group. In this favorable context, she investigates the mid-IR luminescence of rare earth doped chalcogenide and its potential use as optical sensor for CO2 gas detection (Pollutec-Ademe Award 2011, Innovative Techniques for the Environment). She is also developing micro-sensors well adapted for evanescent wave detection in the near and mid-infrared. To develop this mid-IR waveguides and sensors, she cooperates with several laboratories and institute (mainly CIMAP, FOTON-CCLO, IFREMER, BRGM, IETR, ICMCB…). She collaborates with several foreign laboratories on different research topics (UPCE in Czech Republic, Poliba in Italy, Laval University in Canada, Wigner laboratory in Hungary, TITech in Japan …). She was involved in national and international projects (ANR, ADEME, PHC, PICS, GACR, COST …) and is currently working on research subjects concerning : “Capture and Storage of CO2” (partners : IDIL, CIMAP, BRGM and ICMCB, funded by ADEME or ANR) and “All-optical sensor for hazardous gas remote detection” (partners : CIMAP and ONERA, funded by ANR) and “Sensor based on infrared fluorescence: new monitoring tool applied to Pollutants and/or Toxic gas” (partners : CIMAP and IDIL, funded by SATT), “Integrated IR sensor based on SEIRA effect for an efficient detection use of low concentration chemical and biological species” (partners : CSPBAT, FOTON, FRESNEL institute, IFREMER, UTT, funded by ANR). She is author and co-author of about 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers. She received in 2010 a bronze medal of CNRS and a Pollutec-Ademe Award in 2011 for Innovative Techniques for the Environment. She was member of Scientific Council at University of Rennes 1, France (2010-2015), member of Academic Council of University of Bretagne Loire (since 2016) and she is French member of the management committee of COST action MP 1401 (2013-2017) “Advanced fibre laser and coherent source as tools for society, manufacturing and lifescience.” (www.aflaser.eu).
