The Rennes foundation first thesis prize awarded to Julie Carcreff (ISCR, glasses and ceramics team)

This PhD thesis prize from the SDLM doctoral school, 2021 edition is awarded to Julie Carcreff for her research works of high scientific quality on mid- infrared specialty optical fibers.
Rennes foundation first thesis prize awarded to Julie Carcreff (ISCR, glasses and ceramics team)

Julie Carcreff obtained her Master 2 “Chimie du solide et Matériaux” at the University of Rennes 1. She continued her doctorate studies at the Rennes Institute of Chemical Sciences (ISCR),  in the Glass and Ceramic team, under the co-supervision of Johann Troles and David Le Coq with financial supports from the French "Agence de l’Innovation pour la Défense" (AID) and the "Agence Nationale de la Recherche" (ANR, France) in the framework of the COMI project.

Her PhD work included the synthesis and then shaping of chalcogenide glasses by different techniques. In particular, she was in charge of the development of a new method of shaping glass, consisting of 3D glass printing. Her efforts have enabled to manufacture the first infrared glass optical fiber from a 3D printing preform. During her thesis, preliminary results with printed fibers used as sensors have shown that characteristic and very detailed spectroscopic signatures of biological compounds could be obtained. These first tests are very promising and allow to positively consider the development of accurate and early medical diagnoses. In addition, she also developed a new process of step-index chalcogenide fibers doped with rare-earth ions for the purpose of an infrared fiber laser.

In June 2021, she moved to Alphanov in Talence, France. As a laser research and development component engineer there, she works on the functionalization of fiber and thin disk components used for laser design.

She would like to thank the Foundation of Rennes 1, her supervisors and her co-workers at the ISCR for their support.
