Kevin Bernot prepared is PhD thesis (2004-2007) under the supervision of Prof. A. Caneschi in the laboratory of Prof. D. Gatteschi in Florence, Italy. He studied the influence of the magnetic anisotropy of 3d and most of all 4f ions on the magnetic properties of Single-Chains (SCM) and Single-Molecule Magnets (SMM) (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2006, 128, 7947-7956. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 1619-1627; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 5573-5579). He was awarded the ADocMolMag 2008 prize for the best European PhD thesis in Molecular Magnetism.
Then, he made a post-doctoral stay in the same laboratory and established the existence of spin chirality in triangular SMM (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2008, 100, 247205).
In 2008, he was appointed as Assistant Professor at INSA Rennes in the laboratory headed by Pr. O. Guillou (UMR 6226 Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes). He combined its skills in molecular magnetism with the one of the laboratory centered on luminescent properties of 4f ions. He thus studies magneto-luminescent correlations in SMM (Angew. Chem.-Int. Edit. 2012, 51, 1606-1610; Angew. Chem.-Int. Edit. 2013, 52, 350-354. Chem. Eur. J. 2014, 20, 1569-1576).
Then, he developped a reasearch project from molecules to materials by designing luminescent and evaporable SMM (Chem.-Eur. J. 2012, 18, 11379-11387) to build films in which SMM magnetic properties are preserved (ACS Nano 2016, 10, 5663-5669; Appl. Surf. Sci. 2018, 432, 7-14). He presented his HDR in 2015.
Now, he is studying the supramolecular organization of SCM in coordination polymers (Chem. Eur. J. 2018, 24, 6983-6991) or as supramolecular chiral nanotubes. (Angew. Chem.-Int. Ed. 2020, 59, 780-784).
He is strongly collaborating with other ISCR chemists involved in the investigation of the properties of 4f-SMM (B. Le Guennic, L. Norel, F. Pointillart, O. Cador,…) as well as with foreign partners (PICS FloRennes, …).
Kevin Bernot is responsible of applied thermochemistry courses at INSA Rennes and teach in the CSIM Master (UR1-ENSCR-INSA) as well as in some internationnal schools. He recently introduced the concept of SMM in the engeenering communauty (Techniques de l'Ingenieur 2019, re277).
Kevin Bernot is junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) and chairman of the European Conference of Molecular Magnetism (ECMM) that will be held in Rennes in 2022. He is a member of the SCF since 2009 and has been involved in the organization of JIREC 2018 (SCF, Division Enseignement Formation). He co-authored 92 papers, 2 book chapters and guest-edit a special issue.
