First general approach towards ferrocenesulfonamide derivatives

First reported 55 years ago, ferrocenesulfonamides have scarcely been studied in spite of a few specific reports on monosubstituted derivatives synthesis and applications in catalysis, sensing and medicinal chemistry. Polysubstituted ferrocenesulfonamides were especially lacking although additional substituents can help tune steric and electronic properties of ferrocene.

With the financial support of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche, we recently developed the first efficient and general approach towards these underexplored compounds. Not only rare ferrocene derivatives bearing five different substituents are now available, but we can also reach very original substitution patterns. Early applications of these new ferrocenesulfonamides were found in catalysis, acting as efficient ligands in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling.
